How can we achieve a secure, environmentally friendly energy supply?

Kick-start your future with the international Bachelor’s degree in Energy Systems and Renewable Energies at THI. This degree programme is taught entirely in English and is perfect for you if you’re interested in energy technology and sustainability, building on the fundamentals of mechanical and electrical engineering.

Here, you’ll learn how climate-friendly electricity generation works, how smart grids distribute energy efficiently, and why smart storage solutions are driving the energy transition. You’ll also explore modern digitalisation methods such as artificial intelligence in energy engineering, for example for forecasting, optimising and intelligently controlling energy systems. Using digital twins, you’ll model and simulate real-world plants and grids virtually to make operation, planning and maintenance more efficient and sustainable. You’ll also learn all about interacting with new types of prosumers (producers/consumers), particularly in the fields of electromobility and power-to-heat. Together with international fellow students, you’ll work on real-world challenges, gain intercultural experience and build valuable contacts with companies in the industry. You can also plan to spend a semester abroad.

After completing your degree, career opportunities await you in sectors such as energy engineering, energy systems, plant engineering, renewable energies, building energy technology and heat supply, the energy industry, the automotive sector and mechanical engineering.

Our international Bachelor programme Energy Systems and Renawable Energies in English is intended for foreign and German students who are interested in energy technology and sustainability based on the fundamentals of mechanical and electrical engineering.

Upon completion of their studies, students will have a wide range of knowledge of power engineering technologies – with a high level of practical applicability – as well as good business contacts in the industry and the opportunity to gain international experience.

Graduates of the course are prepared for specialist and managerial tasks in the following areas:

  • Sustainable energy generation and distribution
  • Development, production and operation of energy technology plants and energy systems
  • Planning of energy systems and energy consulting

Contents

During their studies, students acquire deeper knowledge in a range of different systems such as building energy systems, off-grid systems, industry supply systems and energy systems in general. The related energy sources are solar power, biomass, wind power and geothermal energy. The course also covers other important fields of studies such as cogeneration technology, heat pumps and energy storage systems for controlling energy generation and consumption capacities. As part of these different modules, the mechanical and electrical engineering aspects that were introduced in the first semesters are specifically deepened.

In addition, new concepts for mobility (e-mobility, biomethane, power to gas - hydrogen and methane) are part of the curriculum. These new concepts lead to additional energy consumers that need to be efficiently integrated into the overall energy system. It is to be expected that in the future it will be possible to increasingly supply heat and cold sinks using heat pump systems, power to heat, solar heat and absorption chillers or renewable gases. In this context, students learn the skillful use of these technologies and their flexibility potential for the integration of fluctuating renewable energies such as wind and sun.

In the “Energy Systems and Renewable Energies” course, one focus is on the integration and interaction within all areas from energy generation to consumption. Therefore, intelligent physical energy distribution (SmartGrids, heating networks, gas networks, digitization of communication) and virtual energy trading on the individual energy markets also play an important role.

At the same time, the students acquire the ability to carry out economic assessments of energy supply concepts in order to prepare investment decisions. These economic analyses together with the knowledge of entrepreneurship enable them to found and/or lead a company.

As a student, you will get an insight into various methods of digital engineering. You will use 3D-CAD (computer-aided design) software for mechanical design. You will learn to simulate thermodynamic and fluid dynamic processes, energy-technical plants and energy systems with commercial simulation tools such as Ebsilon, StarCCM, Matlab, PV*SOL, HOMER…

Short information on application process - 2 steps

1. Apply at Uni - Assist

If you obtained your higher secondary school certificate outside of Germany, uni-assist has to verify your eligibility to study in Germany and to convert school grades to the German grading system. You will have to submit all required documents to uni-assist. Please keep in mind: this step takes four to six weeks.

2. Apply in THI PRIMUSS Portal

Please find all necessary information on application for bachelor study courses.

Language skills

  • English: the programme is taught entirely in English language. Sufficient language skills are essential to successfully complete the coursework: link to overview.

  • German: German language skills are not required for admission, but we strongly recommend learning german or enhancing german language skills, as most employers expect at least A2 level. THI offers German courses at different levels.

Job profiles

The demand for qualified specialists in the field of energy systems in general and in the area of renewable energy forms in particular is enormous, as there is currently a lack of suitably qualified experts.

Common career paths include recruitment by energy supply companies, jobs in the industry or with engineering service providers or planning offices, as well as the job profile of an independent consultant. In addition, it is not uncommon for graduates to find employment in medium-sized companies or official bodies.

Sectors:

  • Power engineering
  • Energy system solution suppliers
  • Plant manufacturers
  • Renewable energies
  • Building energy technology and heating supply
  • Energy industry
  • Automotive and general engineering industries

Fields:

  • Planning
  • Development / Design
  • Technical operations
  • Energy consultancy
  • Test technology
  • Technical sales
  • Quality control
Internships

The study programme requires a preparatory internship of 8 weeks.
It has to be completed before the start of the 4th semester (during semester breaks). The preparatory internship is not part of our admission requirements.

International

The THI, in particular the Institute of new Energy Systems (InES), supports worldwide applied research projects in many areas of the energy industry. Likewise, company representatives are always available as experts to the students, they contribute with guest lectures and project ideas. The contacts built up over 20 years enable students to complete a large number of internships at national or international companies as well as semesters abroad at one of the partner universities (in about 40 countries, eg South Africa, Brazil, etc.). The International Office will advise you on studying abroad during your studies.

  • THI does not work with agencies. Please apply directly to THI via the uni-assist application portal for international applicants.
  • THI never asks for money for application purposes via agencies.
  • THI only sends emails from @thi.de.
  • THI never asks for money before you receive your letter of admission. If you need a VPD from uni-assist, you must pay a processing fee to uni-assist. However, uni-assist only checks certain documents and does not grant admission to THI.
